Her birth didn’t happen the way I planned. Instead of the beautiful water birth I hoped for I ended up strapped to an operating table numb from the waist down. The doctors and nurses swept her off to the side and I held my breath, waiting to hear her cry. I found out later that she was a little blue and limp when she came out. They finally handed her over to my mother who said, “Oh she’s beautiful.” At first, I thought she was just saying that as part of some grandma obligation but she is a pretty baby …
A bit impatient and with lungs of steel but she has a few lovely qualities as well. For example, smiling in her sleep, throwing her head from side to side as if she’s at a rock concert, and squealing like a car in an action flick. Funny – the things that make it all worth it.

For some reason I had it in my head that I would do all the same things after she was born, maybe less frequently but I’d still do them. As it is, I’m only getting away with this because she’s asleep. Uh-oh … speak of the devil!
